But they are lovely for instant cold/chilled water without the hasle of using the fridge and in this weather they are an absolute boon. We have had ours for over five years now and would not be without it.

Mine is. It has a hot side too. I often use it for tea, coffee or to fill a small pan for cooking

With these water coolers do any of you use the covers to keep the water out of the light, plus they help to keep it cool initially.
Only when you see pictures of properties with coolers, I don't think I have ever seen one with a cover on it.
If it ain't broke then I can soon fix it.

Two years ago I noticed a green 'slime' inside my water bottle. I ordered a new one straight away and showed the man the green.
He didnt speak English but motioned with the tea towel to cover it.
Now I have a black Pashmina over it as I couldnt find a cover. I was going to make one but didnt get round to it.

Vee, remember me asking you to measure your bottle for me????

Glynn, next time you come over to our apartment I will make you a drink from it. ;)

We dont have a water cooler and have never seen the water go green. Does this just happen if you have a cooler, we usually go through two 19 litres a week and there are just for the two of us.

All water coolers in the UK now have to be covered (Health & Safety) because of the bad reaction from daylight and especially sunlight, but if you get the insulated ones it also helps to keep the water cool to begin with.

I looked on eBay and it surprised me the vast amount of different and colourful ones that are available and fairly cheap also.

Edit:
louie,

With your water going that quick it would not have time for the bacteria to start reacting.
It is a reaction with light/sunlight that is the problem.
If it ain't broke then I can soon fix it.
